He publicly defended the Boston Tea Party , in which Boston colonists destroyed several tea cargoes in defiance of the tea tax. In —75 he wrote three influential pamphlets, which upheld the agreements of the Continental Congress on the nonimportation, nonconsumption, and nonexportation of British products and attacked British policy in Quebec. In March , through the influence of friends in the New York legislature, Hamilton was commissioned a captain in the provincial artillery. In February Washington invited him to become an aide-de-camp with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He was sent on important military missions and, thanks to his fluent command of French, became liaison officer between Washington and the French generals and admirals.
Eager to connect himself with wealth and influence, Hamilton married Elizabeth, the daughter of Gen. Meantime, having tired of the routine duties at headquarters and yearning for glory, he pressed Washington for an active command in the field. Washington refused, and in early Hamilton seized upon a trivial quarrel to break with the general and leave his staff.
In letters to a member of Congress and to Robert Morris , the superintendent of finance, Hamilton analyzed the financial and political weaknesses of the government. In November , with the war virtually over, he moved to Albany , where he studied law and was admitted to practice in July A few months later the New York legislature elected him to the Continental Congress.
In Hamilton began to practice law in New York City.
He defended unpopular loyalists who had remained faithful to the British during the Revolution in suits brought against them under a state law called the Trespass Act. He was introduced to George Washington by General Nathaniel Greene with a recommendation for advancement. Washington made Hamilton his aide-de-camp and personal secretary. He resigned in after a dispute with the General, but remained in the army and commanded a New York regiment of light infantry in the Battle of Yorktown. Hamilton left the army at the end of the war, and began studying law in Albany, New York.
He served in the Continental Congress in , before returning to practice law, becoming one of the most prominent lawyers in New York City. In , Hamilton participated in the Annapolis Convention and drafted the resolution that led to assembling the Constitutional Convention in He then helped to secure the ratification of the Constitution of New York with the help of John Jay and James Madison, who together wrote the collection of 85 essays which would become known as The Federalist.
Hamilton wrote at least 51 of the essays.
In , Washington appointed him the first Secretary of the Treasury, a position at which he excelled at and gained a vast influence in domestic and foreign issues, having convinced Washington to adopt a neutral policy when war broke out in Europe in In , Hamilton wrote the instructions for a diplomatic mission which would lead to the signing of Jay's Treaty.
He returned to his law practice in He was very much involved with the politics of the country though, and focused his attentions on the presidential race of Hamilton did not like Aaron Burr and went out of his way to make sure that he did not attain a nomination. Similarly, when Burr ran for mayor of New York, Hamilton set about to ruin his chances for that position as well.
